Cardio Workouts: Do I Really Have To?

Finding a fun source of cardiovascular conditioning is a challenge, especially if you have negative feelings about it. If you played a lot of sports growing up, your coach may have used running as a kind of “punishment.” When asked to run, is your first thought, “I despise running?” Of course, it’s a natural response.

At ViaroFit we get it if this describes you—whatever your reasons. Even at low intensities, a cardio workout can dampen your exercise spirit. The good news is you can get a great cardio workout without the foul memory of an earlier running or exercise experience.

Find what works for you. Even within the walls of a gym, cardio can look and feel different. Along with the usual treadmills, at ViaroFit you will find ellipticals, rowers, spin bikes, and recumbent bikes. If you choose a traditional cardio workout, you use one of these modes of exercise for a period of time. Maybe you just can’t imagine yourself exercising this way.

You could try circuit training. This workout involves a circuit or laps, through various exercises and machines. To liven up your cardio workout you may need to modify your time and intensity or change your location between inside the gym or outdoors.

The takeaway. Discover a form of cardio exercise that you enjoy and can sustain. If being confined to a gym isn’t for you, take part regularly in a sport you love. This is a fantastic mode of cardio exercise and is often overlooked. Fitness is forever, and the moment you stop is the moment your body and mind start to decline.

LAX Run Club. If running is something you want to try or continue, give ViaroFit’s new LAX Run Club a chance. The Club and Viaro staff meet at the corner of 3rd and State Street at 8 a.m. on Saturdays unless the weather interferes. Everyone is welcome—no ViaroFit membership needed. You can lead the pack, cruise in the middle, hold up the end, or do any combination of jogging and walking. Are you on the fence? You won’t be forced to do anything you don’t want to do. You just might like getting your cardio with a group of runners and walkers!
