Ask anyone. What’s the hardest part of meeting your health goals? It doesn’t matter if it’s losing weight, putting on muscle, or getting more sleep—there is no “it depends.” The answer, almost universally is, “I just can’t stick with it.” A big part of the answer, besides motivation, is consistency—and of course, being realistic. There are three sure places you can focus your attention—the kitchen, the gym, and getting restful sleep. If you allow these to work together, you’ll likely see progress.
In the kitchen. Consistency in the kitchen is where reaching your goals starts. You can go to the gym as much as you want but the truth is that it’s nearly impossible to reach your goals without consistently eating well. Being realistic, every meal doesn’t need to be perfect, but a goal of consistently making meals high in protein is part of what it takes to achieve your goals in the gym.
In the gym. Your gym workout must have priority to achieve your fitness goals. If you’re only going to the gym once in a blue moon, you’ll not see progress. Plan for your workouts and stick to it. And remember to include both strength and aerobic workouts to make sure you’re getting both stronger and improving your heart and lungs.
Getting good sleep. Recovery from your workouts is just as important as doing them. Sleep is when your body recovers and when most of the repair to your muscles take place. It’s important that you go to bed on time so you can get a full night’s rest. Quality of sleep is also important. If you drink coffee or energy drinks to get through your day, caffeine heavily affects sleep quality. Avoid caffeine at least six hours before bedtime so that the effects of caffeine can fully wear off.
Keep it real. Consistency can be the hardest part of reaching your health goals. It’s important to strive for consistency, but it’s also important to recognize you’re human—with a busy life. Don’t get too caught up on having a bad night’s sleep, an unhealthy meal, or missing a workout. Sometimes you need to make compromises. Prioritize your health and make time for you. Get back on track.
